About the Kits

Montessori in Mind

  1. Set in Reality

In accordance with the Montessori philosophy, the subject of every kit is based in reality with realistic colors to ground the child in the world around them.

  2. Self-Correcting and Control of Error

Each kit is designed for independent self-correction. The kits are intended to be pieced together by the child with immediate visual feedback. By seeing how the thread (tension, length, stitch type) affects how the fabric behaves, they can continuously refine their stitches.

The child will also see if there is not enough or too much thread on their needle, if they forgot to tie a knot, or if a stitch is too long. They are able to correct themselves without the interference of an adult, using the prepared tools and supplies on their work tray. When all is complete, they will feel pride in their work.

  3. Support Other Areas of the Classroom

Are your children learning about the parts of a turtle, or learning about St. Patrick’s Day? Invite them to sew a turtle ornament or a four-leaf clover pillow!

Having sewing works in the classroom that compliment the work they are doing elsewhere can be a really fun, engaging, and tactile experience to solidify what they have learned as they stitch the pieces together.

Child-Focused, Child-Capable

  1. Easy to use materials

Each kit comes ready to be put on the tray and displayed on your practical life shelf!

The felt is carefully selected to be soft, flexible, and easy to sew through, yet strong and self-supporting. This erases any difficulty the child might experience with the fabric, so they can focus solely on their stitching.

Each piece of the kit is robust and round enough to not be easily ripped apart by a curious child. There are no long tails or skinny legs to get tugged on or sewn too tightly.

Every piece, accessory, and embroidery floss featured in the kit is intentionally designed to be easy to hold and maneuver by the child so they can concentrate and build the skills brought by sewing, without having to feel frustration with their tools and materials.

  2. Designed to be Completed in One Sitting

The kits are designed to be simple and small enough to be completed in one sitting, within 10-20 minutes. This makes the work more alluring for students first learning, or kindergarteners seeking a relaxing activity between their work plan items.

  3. Strong visual interest for children walking by

Distinct shapes and colors are an important component to the kits, so that the children are drawn to the work as they pass it on the shelf. By seeing shapes that are recognizable, they have an understanding of what the item is intended to be without the assistance of a teacher. If they see an item that appeals to them, then they are more likely to give sewing a try, building up all those important skills.

High Quality, Durable Materials

  1. Strong Polyester Felt

Felt is the chosen fabric for its structured yet soft hold. The child can hold it upright as they sew, without having to worry about it drooping out of place. The felt is also non-fraying, meaning the ends will not spilt apart as it is being handled. Polyester is one of the strongest felts which is important to withstand pulling by the hands and by the thread as the stitches get tightened, and is easier to pull the needle back to correct mistakes.

  2. Strong 6-Strand Embroidery Floss

This color coordinating floss is very strong to sew with, yet soft to touch. Without the use of scissors, this floss is staying in place!

  3. Add-on: Perfectly Sized Needles

With the “Needle and Threader Add-on”, you will receive needles and threaders intended to compliment the kits. These needles have eyes that are large enough to thread embroidery floss, and ends sharp enough to glide through the fabric in with ease.
